A permanent resident is a person who has obtained permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but who is not yet a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries.
A person who is temporarily in Canada, such as a foreign student or temporary foreign worker, is not a permanent resident.
Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) .The PR Card is proof that you have permanent resident status in Canada. If you leave Canada, you will need this card and passport to return to Canada by commercial transportation, such as a plane, boat, train or bus.
Permanent residents who do not have a valid PR card or who do not have it in their possession while traveling outside the country will be required to obtain a Permanent Resident Travel Document before returning to Canada by commercial transport.

What permanent residents can do. As permanent residents, you have the right to:
– most benefits available to Canadian citizens, including health coverage;
– to live, work or study anywhere in Canada;
– to apply for Canadian citizenship;
– to benefit from the protection of Canadian laws and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Permanent residents must pay taxes and comply with all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.

What permanent residents can not do. You do not have the right to:
– vote or stand for election;
– to hold a job that requires a high level security clearance.
